ความสมบูรณ์ของตัวอสุจิย่อมส่งผลโดยตรงกับคุณภาพของตัวอ่อน ในคนไข้บางรายพบว่าจำนวนตัวอ่อนที่มีคุณภาพดีหรือจำนวนตัวอ่อนที่โตไปจนถึงระยะบลาสโตซิสน้อยกว่าอัตราปกติ สาเหตุส่วนหนึ่งอาจจะมาจากความผิดปกติของ DNA ของตัวอสุจิ ในอสุจิที่กำลังเข้าสู่โปรแกรมการตาย( Apoptotic spermatozoa ) พบว่าจะมีส่วนที่เรียกว่าDNA fragmentationเกิดขึ้นโดยที่ apoptotic spermatozoa สามารถมีรูปร่างปกติ ( Normal morphology)และปฏิสนธิกับไข่ได้ ดังนั้นการเลือกตัวอสุจิที่ปราศจาก DNA fragmentations หรือ non-apoptotic spermatozoa ในการทำ ICSI อาจจจะช่วยเพิ่มโอกาสให้ได้ตัวอ่อนที่มีคุณภาพดีได้มากขึ้น หลักการของ MACs Sperm ใน Apoptotic spermatozoaหรือ อสุจิที่กำลังเข้าสู่โปรแกรมการตายจะมีการรั่วของสารที่เรียกว่าPhosphatidylserine( PS ) ออกมาบริเวณผิวของตัวอสุจิ ซึ่งสาร PS นี้สามสารถจับติดกับตัว Annexin V ได้ดังนั้นเมื่อนำเอาตัวอสุจิผสมกับ น้ำยา MACS GMP Annexin V แล้วผ่าน MACS Column ที่มีสนามแม่เหล็กอยู่ก็จะมีเพียง Non-apoptotic spermatozoa เท่านั้นที่สามารถผ่านไปได้
